Cooking Tips
There are hundreds of cooking tips which are being used daily in millions of kitchens worldwide. These make preparation and recipe times for meals quicker and calmer for those of us who may be in a rush. Advice ranges from the storage of cooked foods, kitchen safety tips to the preparation and cleaning.
- Running cold water over seafood in order to defrost quickly ruins the flavour. It is advisable to follow the defrost instructions on the pack. Removing from the freezer compartment and placing into the refrigerator for a few hours usually does the trick and keeps flavour in tact!
- Mushrooms last longer in the vegetables compartments of your refrigerator when stored in a brown paper bag.
- All vegetables that gets soft and mushy after a while in the refrigerator can be cut up in small or medium chunks/strips and frozen in small portions in a Ziploc bag or container.
- You can prevent leafy vegetables from discolouring by adding a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar to the cooking water.
- Pasta usually sticks together while boiling which means it does not cook evenly. When cooking pasta, add a few drops of olive oil to the water before adding the raw pasta. This prevents clumping and sticking!
- When cooking on the stovetop, always ensure the handles of all pots and pans are NOT facing outwards. If they are, these can be easily knocked over by yourself or anyone else in the kitchen. It is extremely important to be careful especially in households with small children.
- The kitchen is an important place to have a fire extinguisher, as it is more susceptible to fire. If you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, most grease fires can be contained. Do not put the fire extinguisher near the stove as it will be out of your reach if the fire is on the stovetop. Therefore, the best place to put the fire extinguisher is by the door of the kitchen so you have easy access to it.Baking soda can help clean dishes, especially greasy ones in addition to helping with unpleasant odours. Simply add a couple teaspoons of baking soda on small plate or the cover of a container, then place in the refrigerator or microwave for a few hours.
