  • Whole grain breads and cereals are low in fat, good sources of fibre, vitamins, minerals, and protein. A whole grain is a grain that still has its outer covering, which contains the grain's fibre and many of its vitamins and minerals.
  • A great first step to a healthier family is to include a variety of fruit and vegetables each day. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is quick and easy. A serving is a medium-size piece of fruit; ½ cup (4 fl. oz.) of 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice, ½ cup cooked or canned vegetables or fruit, 1 cup of raw leafy vegetables, ½ cup cooked dry peas or beans, or ¼ cup dried fruit.
  • You can get your fruits and vegetables in many ways because fruits and vegetables come fresh, frozen, canned, dried, and as 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed in water before use.
  • Farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations produce organic food. Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones.
  • Many ethnic cuisines (Chinese, Indian, Italian, Mexican) offer lots of low fat, low calorie choices. So if you want to eat healthy and still have lots of different choices, take a taste adventure with ethnic foods.

  • A negative calorie diet is based on the theory that certain foods burn more calories than they contain.
